The salt bridge is used to connect the oxidation and reduction half-cells of a galvanic cell. It allows ions to flow from one solution to the other without mixing the solutions (thus completing the electrical circuit) and allows the solutions in the two half-cells to remain electrically neutral.
The sintered discs that cap off each side are made of glass with a porosity of G2.
